Type One: The Reformer (The Perfectionist)

Type 1s are principled, disciplined, and driven by a strong sense of right and wrong. They strive for perfection and are often critical of themselves and others when things don’t meet their high standards.

Integrity, order, and moral values are important to them, and they often take on a role of correcting what they see as wrong in the world. They value self-control and responsibility.

You might be an Enneagram One if...

  • You frequently notice when things are out of place or not done correctly.
  • You have a strong internal critic that points out where you or others could improve.
  • You feel a deep responsibility to do what’s right, even when it’s difficult.
  • You often have high standards for yourself and others.
  • You tend to correct others or yourself when something isn’t up to your standards.

Some Common Behaviors of Enneagram Ones

  • Making detailed to-do lists and following them strictly.
  • Organizing or cleaning to maintain a sense of order.
  • Offering unsolicited advice or guidance to improve a situation.
  • Striving to be efficient and avoid wasting time.
  • Becoming frustrated when rules or standards are not followed.

Understanding the Chart

In the Enneagram, stress and growth integration lines show how each type behaves under different conditions. Under stress, a type disintegrates, adopting the negative traits of another type. In growth, a type integrates, adopting the positive traits of another type.

Enneagram One in Growth & Stress

Growth (Integration): Moves to Type 7, becoming more spontaneous, joyful, and open to new experiences, relaxing their rigid standards.

Stress (Disintegration): Moves to Type 4, becoming more self-critical, moody, and focused on their perceived flaws or unmet ideals.

Enneagram One Wings

Wings are the adjacent types on the Enneagram circle that influence a person’s core type, adding complementary traits

Wings: 1w9 (more calm, accepting, and detached) or 1w2 (more empathetic, helpful, and people-oriented).
